Oatmeal is super half-assed, right? Especially if it's instant. And far cheaper than buying those sickeningly sweet packets of instant oatmeal in the grocery store is do-it-yourself bags of ready-to-go oatmeal. The idea is to make twenty or so ahead of time. Then, in the morning you just dump the packet contents in a bowl, add water, and heat in the microwave.
You can incorporate endless variations of ingredients: pecans, walnuts, coconut, cinnamon, chocolate chips, dried fruit, powdered creamer, maple sugar, flax meal, etc.
Try this out for a quick and healthy breakfast.
Effort: 1/4 assed
Here's what you need and how you do it
(For one packet)
1/2 cup quick oats
Pinches and small handfuls of whatever ingredients strike your fancy
20 (or more) baggies, waxed paper bags, or reusable sandwich bags
Add all ingredients, seal, and store
To use:
Dump packet contents into microwave-safe bowl
Add 1 cup water
Heat in microwave for 1-1/2 to 2 minutes
Let stand for 1 minute, stir, and then eat

Ok, this is a read "DUH" moment for me. My family goes through TONS of those little oatmeal packets every month. I don't know why it never occurred to me that I could make a healthier version myself! Thank you for this post! This rocks!

I wish I had thought about this earlier. I eat oatmeal everyday from the little store bought packets, when all along I could have just used the quick oats I use for cookies. Yay to money savings!

I have never liked the flavored oatmeal packets. Oatmeal (1 min) is so easy in itself and I add nuts or berries after the cereal has cooked in the microwave. Always satisfies my tummy.
